Workation and Bleisure

Anyone who does not understand the title of this article is in good company, as far as the legal editor writing this article is concerned. These are supposed to be standard terms in modern labour law (see von Steinau-Steinrück in NJW Spezial, p. 626/2021). Workation is [work+vacation], bleisure [business and leisure]. In the first case, questions of labour law arise, especially from IPR, tax law and social security law, if the employee, for example, mixes his holiday in Majorca with home office in the finca; in the second case, how to delimit the costs of the business and private parts of the trip, which in turn can lead to complications under tax law. Our duty as chroniclers, however, is limited here to the dissemination of a new vocabulary
