24 years after signing the Rome Statute establishing the International Criminal Court, the Italian state wants to fulfil the obligations it assumed therein and promulgate a Criminal Code for International Crimes (Codice dei Crimini Internazionali). This will give the Italian criminal court jurisdiction over serious crimes committed abroad, such as genocide and crimes against humanity, and regulate issues such as the lifting of the statute of limitations and state immunity. A draft law by a commission headed by Prof. Fausto Pocar - former president of the Italian-German Lawyers Association, among others - was already published in June 2022. It is not yet known whether the new government will quickly introduce the draft as a bill: On 5.11.2022, there was still a meeting on this at the Roman university "La Sapienza".
