The Federal Republic of Germany has abandoned the principle that multiple nationalities should be avoided wherever possible and has made it easier to obtain a German passport. Until now, anyone born in Germany to foreign parents had to choose between German and foreign citizenship on their 19th birthday. This obligation to make a decision no longer applies: in future, both passports can be kept.
