Cultural Protection Act

An employee of a Munich museum replaced some of the originals on display ("The Fairy Tale of the Frog King" by Franz von Stuck) with good forgeries and used them to finance a comfortable lifestyle.

Some of the paintings were sold to Switzerland and were also auctioned off. It is not clear from the facts of the case in the press release of the Munich District Court's decision how the employee was discovered; it is possible that the forgeries were not perfect. It is interesting to note that the conviction was based on Section 83 (1) of the German Cultural Protection Act, a provision that you should definitely look up (Munich District Court, dated 11.09.2023, Ref. 1110 Ds 13 112633/22).
