Catcalling soon to be a criminal offence?

In every second Italian film from the last century there is a scene in which an attractive woman runs down the street and a construction worker or bus driver whistles after her. Sometimes this also happens in Germany and is called ‘catcalling’.

According to a proposal by Lower Saxony's Justice Minister Kathrin Wahlmann, catcalling, but also any other kind of lewd communication, is to be made a criminal offence in future. According to the current legal situation, only physical sexual harassment is penalized, not purely verbal harassment. (Source: LTO from 12/02/2024)
